Management of Obstructive Sleep Apnea with Mandibular Advancement Devices

Boston, MA •Saturday, June 25, 2016 • 9 a.m. - 5 p.m.

Today’s dental professionals are recognized as being part of the multidisciplinary therapeutic team for the management of obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) by helping to identify signs, symptoms and risk factors that contribute to the development of OSA. Screening, examination and referral for diagnosis are the first three steps taken prior to the management of this medical condition with oral appliance therapy. Side effects including bite change and temporomandibular disorders (TMD) symptoms may develop as a result of short or long-term use of oral devices. It is recommended that dentists offering oral appliance be educated about the diagnosis, prevention, and management of common side effects, including TMD.

Course lectures will provide the most up-to-date information in the field of Dental Sleep Medicine, including clinical protocols and innovations in clinical techniques, allowing today’s practitioners to achieve more successful treatment outcomes. This seminar will emphasize the design and fabrication of morning jaw repositioning devices to prevent and manage bite symptoms, and also in the diagnosis and management of common TMD symptoms, resulting from either short or long-term use of oral appliances.

Participants of this course will leave with a better understanding about the selection, fitting and adjustments of different types of mandibular advancement devices, clinical examination of sleep apnea and TMD patients, the design and fabrication of morning jaw repositioning devices, and daytime devices to manage TMD symptoms.
