Optimally Utilizing Current Medical Updates for Management of the Medically Complex Dental Patient

Boston, MA •Friday, October 21, 2016 • 9 a.m. - 4 p.m.

Successful management of the medically complex dental patient requires that dentists have a good understanding of: common medical conditions encountered; related pharmacotherapies; drug-drug interactions between the patient’s medications; the anesthetics, analgesics, antibiotics, antivirals, antifungals (AAAAAs) used in dentistry, along with laboratory tests which help assess disease control status and the functioning capacity of the vital organs such as the liver, kidneys and heart. Thus, the practitioner can knowledgeably decide when crucial intervention is needed with patient scheduling, MD communication, MD-dictated temporary drug interruptions, and/or deviations with the use of standard AAAAAs during dentistry.

This full-day course is intended to provide participants with a better understanding of the medically complex dental patient so that necessary deviations or modifications in care during dentistry are appropriately and successfully implemented for optimal outcomes. Discussions will be solidified by using evidenced-based knowledge, guidelines, and real-time cases as examples. Dental practitioners must develop effective and efficient ways to access and evaluate useful information so they are confident when managing the medically complex patient. This highly interactive course provides practical ways of incorporating medical information and clinical pharmacology at the point of patient care.

This course is intended for general dentists, sub-specialty dentists, dental hygienists, dental residents and other dental health care professionals engaged in direct patient care or teaching pre-doctoral or post-doctoral dental students.
